5 Reasons Why You Need To Add Raw Onions To Your Daily Diet

It is important for someone’s health to eat vegetables in order to stay fit and disease-free. It said that people who eat more vegetables and fruits are likely to have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Vegetables contain nutrients vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies.

Onion is one of the vegetables that have various vitamins, minerals, and potent plant compounds that have been shown to promote health in many ways. Onion has been using as medicine since ancient times. Back then, headaches, heart disease, and mouth sores have been treated with onions. Here are five reasons why you should add raw onions to your daily diet.

1. Improve Heart Health

Flavonoids in onion help to reduce bad cholesterol in the body. Thiosulfinates are known to keep the consistency of the blood right as they make the blood thinner. Due to this, the risk of heart attack and stroke reduces.

2. Prevent Cancer

A study compared 833 people with colorectal cancer with 833 people who did not have the disease. The study found that the risk of colorectal cancer was 79% lower in those who regularly consumed allium vegetables such as onions.

One cup of chopped onions contains at least 13.11% of an adult’s recommended daily intake of vitamin C. As an antioxidant, this vitamin helps counter the formation of free radical compounds that have links to cancer.

3. Rich In Antioxidants

Onion also contains over 25 different varieties of flavonoids. These antioxidants inhibit oxidation, a process that leads to cellular damage and contributes to diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

4. Contribute To Healthy Bones

One onion contains 25.3 mg of calcium according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Calcium is well known in maintaining strong bones, adding onion to your salad can give a better result in better bone health.

5. Improve Skin And Hair

UV rays that damage your hair can be protected with vitamin A, C, and K in onions by getting rid of pigmentation. Vitamin C may support the building and maintenance of collagen, which provides structure to skin and hair.
