COVID-19 Updates: Global COVID-19 Cases Surpass 30 Million

BEIJING, Sept. 18 — The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, reported Xinhua news agency.

NEW YORK — Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 30 million on Thursday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The global case count reached 30,003,378, with a total of 942,989 deaths worldwide as of 6:22 p.m. local time (2222 GMT), the CSSE data showed.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazil’s COVID-19 death toll is approaching 135,000 after 829 more patients died of the COVID-19 in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 134,935, the Ministry of Health said on Thursday.

In the same period, tests detected 36,303 new cases of infection, bringing the total caseload since the start of the outbreak here to 4,455,386.

SAN JOSE — Costa Rica on Thursday registered a total of 60,818 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the country after the Ministry of Health reported 1,302 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, 17 deaths were registered, bringing the national death toll to 666, the ministry said.

TUNIS — The Tunisian authorities on Thursday classified all the country’s 24 provinces as the red zone, the highest level of severity in terms of the spread of the COVID-19, Tunis Afrique Presse (TAP) reported.

The announcement came as an average of more than 10 coronavirus infections per 100,000 inhabitants has been recorded in the 24 provinces, said the National Observatory of New and Emerging Diseases.

NEW YORK — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on Thursday that the COVID-19 pandemic is expanding risks to peace everywhere.

“It poses an enormous threat to people caught up in conflict, which is why I made an immediate appeal for a global ceasefire,” the UN chief said at the UN peace bell ceremony on the occasion of the 39th anniversary of the International Day of Peace, which is observed around the world each year on Sept. 21.
