The Largest Monster-Sized Alligator Snapping Turtle Found In Florida

It is well-known that turtles can live up to 100 years. They are reptiles that can be a very good pet to have as they have a very long life-span.

With many types of turtles, they are no average size for the turtles. Turtles are believed to live all over the world and in almost every type of climate. The reason why they can be found on every continent is that they can be very adaptive.

It is reported that a 100-pounds Suwannee snapping turtle was found in Florida. Together with the turtle, two other snapping turtles weighed 46-pounds and 64-pounds were found to be trapped in a net trap in the New River, north of Gainesville.

The prehistoric-looking reptiles are a new species and researchers have been studying the creatures since 2014. The three turtles were released back to the river they had their photograph taken and vital stats recorded.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is making a study on the Suwannee snapping turtle’s population size. The study was conducted collaboratively with researchers in Florida and Georgia. The number of turtles has been decreasing because of habitat loss.

This turtle has been dubbed as “the dinosaur of the turtle world”. It is believed to be the largest freshwater turtles in North America. According to National Geographic, male alligator snapping turtles weigh about 175-pounds and reached up to 200-pounds.
