2021 Budget: Give Better Social Security Protection for Workers – MTUC

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 5 — It is hoped that the government will extend better social security protection for workers in the 2021 Budget which will be tabled tomorrow, to ensure the welfare of those affected by COVID-19.

Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) deputy president Mohd Effendy Abdul Ghani said social protection such as insurance, social welfare and protection for old age are crucial needs as we face this seemingly endless pandemic situation.

“For those who have lost their jobs, the government must see that they get immediate assistance, including financial aid and re-employment, for their survival.

“With for the new norm situation, the government needs to prepare a guideline to provide protection  for those working from home, in consideration of their safety, facilities and working hours,” he told Bernama.

In addition, Mohd Effendy hoped that the wage subsidy programme which would end on Dec 31 would be continued, adding that its payment process should be eased and expedited.

He said the financial assistance paid to employers for each employee earning RM4,000 and below could have the employees retained thus reducing unemployment in the country.

Meanwhile,  National Association of Skilled Workers (PKPB) secretary-general Mohammad Rizan Hassan hoped that the government would provide more opportunities for experienced skilled workers to become guest instructors at skills institutes.

He said the move could help the country produce quality graduates who are able to meet industry requirements.

“However, they should not be burdened with administrative constraints as this would prevent them from contributing to the country.

“Cash incentives can also be given to those who are prepared to take on the role as instructors while  incentives can be considered for employers willing to release their star employees for a certain period,” he said.
