Couple That Married For 70 Years Holding Hands Before Both Died of COVID-19

A couple who have been married for almost 70 years had time to make the last memories by holding hands together before dying due to COVID-19.

The couple, identified as Margaret and Derek Firth, 91, died at Trafford General Hospital, Manchester a few weeks ago. The pair lived in Partington, were sweethearts since the age of 14.

The couple was hospitalized due to various health problems, but after a few days, they were confirmed positive for COVID-19. Margaret was admitted to Wythenshawe Hospital but was transferred to Trafford. Derek Firth was treated at Wythenshawe but had to be transferred to Trafford to be with his wife after doctors were worried about the couple’s condition.

Their daughter Barbara Smith said that when Derek joined Margaret, she asked him “where’ve you been”?

“From then she seemed to get better, it seemed to give her a boost. It was quite a sad moment, but it was really lovely that they were both there together,” said Barbara.

Derek was pronounced dead on January 31 while Margaret died 3 days later. Derek and Margaret were a loving couple when they were little and married in 1950.

They had five children, later going on to have 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

“They loved enjoying themselves and making the most of life. Last year they celebrated their seventieth wedding anniversary,” added Barbara.

For now, a date for their funeral has yet to be confirmed, but the family hopes that it will be a joint ceremony.
