Loneliest Monk Who Lives In Rituo Temple, Tibet’s Most Isolated Temple

Rituo Temple lies on top of a small mound, on a sliver of land stretching into the serene Yamdrok Lake, one of the three holy lakes of Tibet. It is the home of a solitary monk who spends his days chanting sutras and meditating.

The name Rituo means ‘the stone on the mountain’ in Tibetan. The name was inspired by a centuries-old rock enshrined here, a relic that is said to have the power to cure all diseases. Appropriate to its location in the middle of nowhere, it is often referred to as Tibet’s loneliest temple. With a long history of more than 700 years, it is Tibet’s hidden gems.

Very few people did visit due to its remote location. However, peace and quiet are something that most of us only dream of. Standing atop the temple, one can see wildlife like Tibetan antelopes and bar-headed geese swimming in the water. Nature is even more amazing at night, the starry skies are reflected on the lake, like a fairyland.

The solitary inhabitant of the temple is Ahwang Pincuo. He spends most of his days bringing water from down at the lake all the way to the temple, chanting sutras, and meditating. He is the latest in the long line of solitary monks who have watched over Rituo Temple over the centuries.

For those who are up for the challenge of adventure, isolation, and peace this is definitely a must-go destination.
