‘Jom Berbuka’ Together, Secret Recipe Brings Back Timeless Tradition of Nasi Kerabu Specials

Secret Recipe, renowned for its delectable offerings, is thrilled to announce the launch of its highly anticipated Ramadan menu, entitled “Jom Berbuka“. Drawing inspiration from the rich culinary heritage of Kelantan’s famed Nasi Kerabu, this year’s theme beckons patrons to indulge in the timeless tradition of Nasi Kerabu Specials throughout the month of Ramadan.

Marking the fourth consecutive year, this year’s menu emphasises the joy of communal dining, which can be highlighted by its choice of sharing platters. From March 8th to April 9th, Secret Recipe invites families and communities to unite at their outlets and delight in the authentic flavours of Nasi Kerabu that come in sets. This vibrant rice dish, infused with the essence of blue pea flowers, carries profound cultural and culinary significance and is bound to gratify your palate while fostering bonds with loved ones.

“Originating from the Malaysian state of Kelantan, Nasi Kerabu is a cherished dish savoured not only during iftar but also throughout various occasions. Its vibrant colours and flavourful components symbolise the diversity and richness of Malaysian cuisine, bringing families and communities together in the spirit of Ramadan,” said Evelyn Lee, Head of Marketing of Secret Recipe.

This dish reflects the cultural influences of Malay, Thai, and Chinese cuisines, blending them into a harmonious and flavourful combination. Hence, as a true-blue Malaysian brand, we are proud to showcase the abundance of local ingredients and the intricate flavours that define Malaysian gastronomy, all through our Nasi Kerabu Specials,” she further explained.

The main dish on the new menu features the classic Nasi Kerabu, offering the dish’s essence in its simplest form. Blue pea-infused rice is accompanied by salted egg, fresh vegetables, fish crackers, coconut sauce, sambal, and budu sauce for a flavourful and texturally diverse combination.

For those seeking additional protein, this year’s menu boasts a variety of other options to elevate the experience. Seafood lovers can order the Nasi Kerabu with Grilled Turmeric Saba Fish, a scrumptious grilled mackerel slathered in turmeric or Nasi Kerabu with Stir Fry Turmeric Squid featuring tender squid stir-fried with turmeric.

Last but not least, the classic combination of Nasi Kerabu with chicken thigh must not be missed. Generously topped with the spicy tang of percik sauce, you can either opt for the Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Percik or the Nasi Kerabu with Ayam Rangup, both offering a delightful textural contrast of fried chicken, either tenderly grilled or crispy fried.

For larger gatherings, save up to RM30 when you order the sharing platters for two or four people, featuring a delightful combination of Nasi Kerabu that is accompanied by all three proteins. That’s not all, complement your meal with refreshing drinks such as the Rose Calamansi Fizz or Plum Calamansi Fizz at a discounted RM6.80, or order extra crispy Fish Crackers at RM5.90 for a truly satisfying Ramadan feast.

Sweetness Is Meant to be Shared

Our Honest Review

Embarking on a culinary journey at Secret Recipe’s Ramadan showcase in 1Utama, Selangor was an experience to savor. From the moment we were welcomed to taste the menu on March 11th, we were treated to a feast for the senses.

The highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the Nasi Kerabu Specials. Each bite was a symphony of flavors, with the fish crackers (keropok ikan), salted eggs, budu, and vegetables blending harmoniously to create a balanced taste sensation. Unlike typical Nasi Kerabu dishes where the fish crackers can sometimes disappoint, Secret Recipe’s version impressed with its crispiness and hint of smokiness, elevating the dish to new heights.

Accompanying the kerabu rice were delectable side dishes that left no room for disappointment. The Grilled Turmeric Saba Fish, Stir Fry Tumeric Squid, and Ayam Percik provided the perfect protein accompaniments. The grilled turmeric saba fish, served in filet form, was succulent and flavorful, enhanced by the tangy air asam that accompanied it. The inclusion of ayam percik added an exclusive flavor to the meal, rarely seen outside of Ramadan festivities. The soft, juicy meat and flavorful peanut sauce made the chicken a crowd-pleaser, suitable for diners of all ages.

To wash down these delectable dishes, Secret Recipe offered two refreshing beverage options: Rose Calamansi Fizz and Plum Calamansi Fizz. While both were delightful, the Plum Calamansi Fizz stole the show with its Ramadan-appropriate blend of asam boi and mint, offering a refreshing respite after a day of fasting.

Overall, Secret Recipe’s Ramadan menu was a triumph, offering a delightful array of flavors that will satisfy even the most discerning palates. It’s a culinary journey worth embarking on, especially for those longing to taste traditional East Coast fare during the holy month of Ramadan.
