Cocoa Just Got a Glow Up, Barry Callebaut & Maersk Unveil Mega Warehouse in Malaysia

Imagine a warehouse so big it could basically star in its own Netflix documentary about chocolate. That’s exactly what Barry Callebaut, the world’s chocolate heavyweight, and logistics giant Maersk just pulled off in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

Welcome to one of the largest cocoa bean warehouses in Asia Pacific: a 600,000 sq. ft., multi-storey chocolate vault that can hold nearly 40,000 metric tons of cocoa beans (aka enough to fuel your midnight cravings for years).

Why does this matter?

Because Malaysia just cemented itself as a serious player on the global cocoa map. This mega-facility isn’t just about stockpiling beans; it’s about creating a supply chain that’s faster, smarter, and greener. Think real-time inventory tracking, optimized workflows, and energy-efficient designs like LED lighting and natural ventilation. Basically, Willy Wonka meets Silicon Valley.

Pop Culture meets Global Cocoa 🌍

The warehouse sits just a stone’s throw away from Barry Callebaut’s cocoa factory and Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas, a sweet spot for connecting cocoa from Africa, Latin America, and Asia to chocolate lovers across the globe.

  • Alain Freymond, Global Cocoa President at Barry Callebaut, calls it a “game-changer” for the cocoa supply chain. Translation? Your favorite chocolate brands might just arrive faster and fresher.

  • Maersk’s Ditlev Blicher says it’s all about control, visibility, and efficiency, logistics talk for “no more waiting forever for your chocolate fix.”

The Bigger Picture

This project aligns with Malaysia’s mission to boost its agri-commodity sector and lock in its status on the world cocoa stage. Beyond the corporate speak, it’s about building a chocolate future that’s sustainable, innovative, and ready for whatever the global sweet tooth demands next.

The opening ceremony was less red carpet, more cocoa carpet, with leaders, stakeholders, and partners gathering to toast this milestone.
