Silent Call Scam on the Rise in Malaysia, Don’t Become the Next Victim

Open your eyes wide open because this is an urgent matter. Recently,  MCMC is calling for our attention to the “Silent Scam Caller”, a term now familiar to the public.

As the world began to evolve into multipurpose complex technology, AI has been our loyal everyday buddy. From solving daily challenges to guiding us through study sessions, AI is on call to make life smoother.

With all that, scammers have upgraded their tricks too and they’re getting smarter about how they target us.

Hidden Trap to Steal Your Identity

Unfortunately, there’s a shady group that couldn’t resist hijacking AI for their own twisted agenda. With AI this advanced, your voice could be copied (cloned) and put to some unethical schemes such as:

  • Fake your voice to plead with your parents for money.
  • Gain free access to your bank account by bypassing voice-verification security.
  • Trick employees with the boss’s voice into transferring the company’s money.

And poof, there goes your beloved money, disappearing without any warning.

Say NO to Scam With These Tips

Before these scammers strike you with other ghost calls, these tips will make you three steps ahead from their illicit motives.

Upon the phone rings with Unknown ID caller, you should:

  • Wait for awhile for the caller to speak first

Reminder: Do not say a word, even a simple “hello,” because AI can clone your voice from only one second of recording.

  • Make sure to activate two-factor authentication (2FA) on every social media account you use
  • Download apps like Truecaller to spot and block scam callers
  • Be unique with your secret code and use it with your family members in case of emergencies
  • Use separate numbers for personal and public use

Mind you, some people might just accidentally call you through ‘pocket dials’. So, not every silent call is a scam. Keep the list in check to spot a scammer:

  • Watch out for the long, complicated international numbers
  • If you hear no breathing or background noise in between 3 seconds, simply hang up
  • Nonstop calls from different numbers flooding your phone might be a sign of a scam, so block it

A World in Peace for All

Too bad, we can’t escape these new scam tactics totally these days. But thankfully, CyberSecurity Malaysia has our back as a reminder to maintain optimum safety.

Hey pals, don’t think twice and block those strange numbers! The world’s too big and exciting to let a silent call mess with your future. Make sure to remind your family and friends, too.
