The Greatest Free Ad in History? How Nutella Gained Millions in Organic Reach via NASA’s Artemis II

A recent broadcast demonstrated that even astronauts can’t resist a taste of home, specifically a jar of Nutella. Despite the truth that the Artemis mission is designed to send humans to the Moon.

The internet’s favourite viral moment is a a jar of Nutella that was seen floating inside a NASA spaceship. It become known as the “perfect accidental ad.”

A Zero-Gravity Viral Sensation

Dexerto and Xplora shared the footage and the video soon received over 460,000 views. As astronauts carry out  their duties, the famous hazelnut spread pervades the cabin in the video.

Seeing an ordinary home item alongside billion-dollar technology moved viewers worldwide with its pure relatability.

Why Nutella is A Space Essential

There is science behind the snack, despite the fact that  it appears to be a lucky break for the business. For the Artemis program, NASA carefully chooses foods and Nutella is an ideal option for a number of reasons:

  • High energy: High-calorie hazelnut spread provides astronauts an essential, instant energy boost to meet the physical demands of grueling space travel.
  • Zero G-Friendly: Its thick texture prevents spills and crumbs, protecting fragile electronics from damage within the delicate microgravity environment of the spacecraft.
  • Mental health: Familiar comfort foods are essential for maintaining astronaut morale and mental well-being during the isolation of long-duration space missions.

The Power of Organic Marketing

Ferrero has gained millions dollars from this “accidental” product placement. It draws attention to a rising trend which viewers prefer real, unplanned situations than typical ads.

The “Nutella in Space” trend reminds us that familiar flavors travel with us as NASA nears the lunar surface.

Fun Fact: The astronauts also brought 58 tortillas on this mission. Tortillas are the preferred “bread” of space because they don’t produce crumbs, making them the perfect vehicle for that viral jar of Nutella!
