Huawei And Universiti Malaya Advancing Smarter Preventive Health Innovation Through Wearable Research

KUALA LUMPUR, 21 MAY 2026 – Huawei Consumer Business Group (CBG) Malaysia and Universiti Malaya (UM) officially commemorated a significant milestone in preventive health innovation through a signing ceremony held on 19 May 2026, formalising a collaboration for a Diabetes Risk Study research involving smartwatch technology through the newly launched HUAWEI WATCH FIT 5 Pro.

The memorandum of agreement marks the first research collaboration between Universiti Malaya and Huawei Malaysia, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing smarter, more accessible health technology solutions that support healthier lifestyles and greater health awareness among Malaysians.

The signing ceremony was officiated by Professor Ir. Dr. Kaharudin Bin Dimyati, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research &Innovation), Universiti Malaya, and Patrick Ru, Country Director of Huawei Consumer Business Group Malaysia.

“At Huawei, we believe technology should go beyond connectivity and convenience to create meaningful value in people’s everyday lives. Through this collaboration with Universiti Malaya, we hope to further explore how wearable technology can support greater health awareness while empowering Malaysians to take a more proactive approach towards their everyday health and wellbeing,” said Patrick Ru, Country Director of Huawei Consumer Business Group Malaysia.

The research initiative will be led by Professor Dr. Lim Lee Ling, Executive Director of the Department of Clinical Research and Advancement and Senior Consultant Endocrinologist at Universiti Malaya, and is expected to commence in Malaysia in the near future.

Spanning a duration of two years, the study will explore blood glucose-related research through wearable technology capabilities integrated within Huawei smartwatches, reinforcing the growing role of smart wearables in supporting preventive healthcare innovation.

As part of the initiative, users of the HUAWEI WATCH FIT 5 Pro will be among the first to register their interest in participating in the upcoming study, with further details regarding participation expected to be announced by Universiti Malaya later.

The initiative reflects a shared vision between both organisations to leverage innovation and research to enhance overall health and well-being of Malaysians through greater awareness, accessibility, and proactive health management.

“This collaboration reflects Universiti Malaya’s continued commitment towards advancing research and innovation that can create meaningful impact for society. By combining academic expertise with advancements in wearable technology, this initiative represents a leapfrog towards better community engagement and empowerment, designed to elevate preventive healthcare awareness and encourage Malaysians to take charge of their everyday well-being,” said Professor Ir. Dr. Kaharudin Bin Dimyati, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research &Innovation), Universiti Malaya.

The collaboration further reinforces Huawei’s growing commitment towards expanding preventive health innovation within its wearable ecosystem, particularly through features designed to support smarter health insights, lifestyle awareness, and holistic wellbeing experiences for users.

The HUAWEI WATCH FIT 5 Series is now available starting from RM799 (RRP), with early bird discount voucher of up to RM150 via all HUAWEI Experience Stores, the HUAWEI Official Website, HUAWEI Official Store on Shopee, HUAWEI Flagship Store on Lazada, and the HUAWEI Official Store on TikTok.
