Canteen Malaya has officially opened its doors at one of Kuala Lumpur’s most popular food streets, offering diners a more relaxed take on seafood dining with live seafood, an open kitchen and a four-level dining space.
Instead of picking from a typical street-side menu, diners can choose their own catch from crabs and tiger prawns to fresh fish before watching it being prepared in the restaurant’s open kitchen.
And if you’re a crab person, there’s plenty to choose from.
Canteen Malaya serves more than 30 crab flavours and preparations, including signature dishes such as Salted Egg Crab, Kam Heong Crab, Sour and Spicy Crab, Indonesian Crab and White Pepper Crab.
Beyond crab, the menu also features giant tiger prawns, tank-to-table fish prepared in different styles, steamed clams and squid.
The restaurant itself is spread across four levels, with space for up to 700 guests. There’s a main dining area, private rooms and an event hall that can accommodate up to 250 people, making it suitable for everything from casual meals to bigger celebrations.
Designed around a central garden, the interior combines greenery, natural light, warm wood finishes and earthy tones, offering a quieter dining atmosphere away from the usual hustle and bustle of Jalan Alor.
According to Canteen Malaya’s management representative, Patricia Wong, the restaurant was created with Jalan Alor’s mix of locals and international visitors in mind.
The idea is simple: fresh seafood, an open kitchen and a space where diners can actually take their time over a meal.
