Three Malaysian Universities Are Teaming Up To Make Campus Mental Health Support Better

University life isn’t always as exciting as it looks on Instagram.

Between classes, deadlines, friendships and figuring out what comes next, students can have a lot on their plate. That’s why three Malaysian universities are joining forces to make mental health support on campus more accessible and inclusive.

Monash University Malaysia, Sunway University and Taylor’s University have come together for Thrive Together 2026, the Triple Alliance’s flagship mental health initiative.

Held at Monash University Malaysia, the two-day programme brought together more than 1,700 students, staff, mental health professionals, educators and community partners.

And instead of just talking about mental health, the initiative focuses on things people can actually use from knowing when to ask for help to supporting a friend who may be struggling.

It’s Not Just About Crisis Support

One of the key messages from the initiative is that mental health support shouldn’t only happen when someone reaches breaking point.

Professor Dato’ Dr Andrew Mohanraj Chandrasekaran, President of the Malaysian Mental Health Association, highlighted the importance of social connection, resilience and seeking help early.

An internal survey also found that 16% of respondents reported experiencing cyberbullying, highlighting how online experiences can also affect young people’s wellbeing.

His message? Asking for help isn’t a weakness, and young people should feel comfortable reaching out before things become more serious.

Students Got More Than Just Talks

Thrive Together included interactive activities covering everything from mindfulness and self-care to emotional awareness and resilience.

There were also workshops on art therapy, supporting friends in distress, mental health screening and suicide prevention awareness.

For university staff, sessions explored topics including supporting neurodivergent students, creating trauma-sensitive environments and developing better listening and helping skills.

Representatives from all three universities also took part in a dedicated forum to discuss how student mental health support can be strengthened across their campuses.

Building A Campus Where Asking For Help Feels Normal

Professor Dato’ Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, President and Pro Vice-Chancellor of Monash University Malaysia, said the initiative reflects the universities’ responsibility to make support more accessible and reduce the stigma around mental health.

And that’s ultimately what Thrive Together is trying to do move the conversation beyond simply “Are you okay?” and towards creating campus communities where students actually know where to go, who to talk to and how to support each other.

With the Triple Alliance bringing the three universities together, Thrive Together 2026 is one of its first major initiatives focused on turning that collaboration into something students can actually feel in their everyday university life.
