McDonald’s Malaysia Donates RM2 Million, Bringing Total Zakat to RM16 Million

McDonald’s Malaysia continues to fulfil its zakat obligations with a RM2 million payment for 2026. This brings its total contributions since 2017 to RM16 million.

The commitment reflects the responsibility of a 100% Muslim-owned company to fulfil its religious obligations. It also supports the well-being of asnaf communities.

McDonald’s Malaysia Continues Its Zakat Commitment

The zakat handover ceremony was held at McDonald’s Drive-Thru Putrajaya Presint 2. Attendees included the Mufti of the Federal Territories, Sahibus Samahah Tuan Haji Ahmad Fauwaz bin Fadzil. Also present was PPZ-MAIWP Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Haji Abdul Hakim bin Amir Osman.

A sum of RM300,000 was handed to PPZ-MAIWP from its total RM2 million zakat contribution.

McDonald’s Malaysia began its zakat handover programme in Kelantan in July. It has since visited nine other states. The Federal Territories marked its 10th destination. Through this initiative, the company works with zakat institutions to distribute contributions. It also supports asnaf families through Kotak Rezeki containing daily necessities.

“Alhamdulillah, McDonald’s Malaysia is able to continue its RM2 million zakat contribution this year, bringing our total contributions to RM16 million since 2017. Among the blessings bestowed upon us is a portion that rightfully belongs to the asnaf community. That is why fulfilling this obligation has always been part of our responsibility in conducting business,” said Dato’ Haji Azmir Jaafar, Managing Director and Local Operating Partner of McDonald’s Malaysia.

“The support of our customers, the efforts of our employees and the cooperation of our business partners enable us to continue carrying out this responsibility. Through our collaboration with zakat institutions, we hope these contributions will help meet the needs of asnaf communities and support efforts to improve their well-being,” he added.

“Zakat teaches us to be grateful and manage our wealth responsibly. We demonstrate this gratitude through obedience to Allah SWT’s commandments, including paying zakat when the required conditions are met,” said Sahibus Samahah Tuan Haji Ahmad Fauwaz bin Fadzil, Mufti of the Federal Territories.

“Assistance must be delivered with wisdom, while preserving recipients’ dignity and considering their actual circumstances. For those who are able, support through education, skills training and employment opportunities can also help build more stable lives,” he added.

Supporting Asnaf Families Through Community Initiatives

Beyond its zakat contribution, McDonald’s Malaysia distributed Kotak Rezeki to 80 asnaf families in Putrajaya. The boxes contained daily necessities to help ease their expenses.

The company also donated 15 laptops to asnaf students from Kolej Profesional MAIWP. These will support their learning needs, including completing assignments and accessing digital educational resources.

Additionally, McDonald’s Malaysia provided 2,800 complimentary meals to the local community. The meals were distributed across four restaurants:

  • McDonald’s Drive-Thru Putrajaya
  • McDonald’s Drive-Thru Setiawangsa
  • McDonald’s Drive-Thru Sentul UOA
  • McDonald’s Desa Pandan

A Continued Commitment to Community Welfare

McDonald’s Malaysia organises more than 10,000 community activities annually across its 385 restaurants nationwide. These initiatives reflect its commitment to being a caring neighbour to surrounding communities.

“McDonald’s Malaysia has carried out various community initiatives since 2017. These include celebrating birthdays with orphans, contributing moreh meals to mosques and surau during Ramadhan, visiting elderly residents at care homes during festive seasons, and many other activities. We remain actively committed to supporting communities from all walks of life,” added Dato’ Haji Azmir.

In 2019, McDonald’s Malaysia became the first business entity to receive the Corporate Zakat Payer Recognition Certificate from PPZ-MAIWP. The certificate recognises corporate zakat contributions made by businesses in the Federal Territories.

It complements McDonald’s Malaysia’s existing Halal Certification from the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).
