Photo shared by Indian Forest Service officer, Susanta Nanta is purposely to challenge his followers to identify the animal. The photo that looks like there is a corpse under the tree is actually a fungus called “Dead Man Fingers”.
“Dead Man Fingers” also known as Xylaria polymorpha, just like the name of it, looks like fingers buried in the ground and looks dead cause of the grey in color. Mostly can be found in the regions of Nepal, Bhutan, and Northeastern India, it can also be found in regions of the United States.
The unique part is, it changes color from white to blue and black throughout its life cycle. White in color at first, then turn pale blue as they grow, and finally turn black before drying up. This fungus is not an edible cause of few reasons and poisonous is one of the reasons yet “Dead Man’s Fingers” are cooked and eaten in parts of China. As they darken, they become harder to digest and are only used as decoration.
