Salt In Our Daily Lives, How Much Can We Take?

The use of salt in cooking has become a staple in our lives, without salt we feel the cooking is incomplete. But, do we all know how much salt we can take in a day?

According to the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM), salt is an organic compound that contains essential minerals needed in the human body in small amounts only.

“Adults are advised to take 5g of salt a day equivalent to one teaspoon,” said KKM on their tweets.

Besides, the World Health Organization (WHO) has also release a salt intake guide for adults and children. The salt or its scientific name is Sodium Chloride (NaCI) and is also known as Sodium. Other than that, a teaspoon of salt or five grams of salt, equivalent to 2000 milligrams of sodium.

And according to WHO, adults are advised to take five grams of salt or no more than one teaspoon of salt a day. This amount includes the salt found in existing foods, naturally or added during the cooking process.

Although there is an intake schedule for infants and children, health experts recommend taking less than five grams of salt for infants and children.

“Choose food from fresh ingredients. At home, avoid using salt in cooking. Because health is very valuable,” added KKM.
