Research Found Having Brain Activity Partly Blocked During ‘Dreaming’ Stage Of Sleep Help Losing Weight

During the coronavirus pandemic, everyone is taking a precaution step by keeping themselves at home. Staying at home is the first option taken by most countries to curb the virus. Due to this, people tend to become passive and developed an unhealthy lifestyle.

Many people were expressing their frustration over their weight after the quarantine ends. When most people are going back to their old daily routine, it is the right time to get the old weight too. So now, people are adapting to a healthier eating diet. But, do you ever think that having a good sleep can also help you to lose weight?

A study found that by having brain activity partly blocked during the ‘dreaming’ stage of sleep can help to reduce weight and overcome addictions. Appetite can be reduced by using light pulses to shut down neurons in the hypothalamus region of the brain during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

Lukas Oesch, a neuroscientist stated that the activation of the neurons in the hypothalamus during the REM phase of sleep regulates eating.

The team of scientists used light pulses to shut down the activity of neurons of mice undergoing REM sleep. The result found that this technique known as ‘optogenetics’ led to the mice eating less when they woke. This suggests that REM sleep is essential for mammals to maintain consistent food intake.

Most people have less good sleep quantity. This can be affected by someone’s lifestyle and late-night screen exposure. This study suggests that getting a good night’s sleep plays important role in maintaining good eating habits.
