If you want to compare the local film industry with the film industry abroad, it is not that big. But lately, local films are seen to be on the rise with the production of some films that have a different storyline than others.

But, did you know that there are some local films that make it to the international stage? In fact, some of the films have received recognition for the uniqueness of the work.

So, here we list some of the successful local films internationally. Let’s get started!

1. Pekak (2016)

Many people must not know about the existence of this film, right? The film ‘Pekak’ has been starred great actors including Zahiril Adzim, Sharifah Amani, Amerul Affendi, Iedil Putra, and Sharifah Sakinah. The film was released in 2016 but it received less response.

Even so, the film has won awards on the international stage. Among the winners were the Best Actor award won by Zahiril Adzim and Khairul Azri Md Noor who received the Best Script award at Russia’s International Motivational Film Festival – Bridge Of Arts 2016 (IMFF 2016).

Pekak tells the story of a young man named Uda who has hearing problems. Because he wanted to regain his hearing, he had engaged in illegal activities such as selling drugs. He later met a schoolgirl named Dara. If you want to know what happens next, you can watch it on Netflix!

2. Redha (2016)

The next film that made it to the international level was a film called ‘Redha’. For those who do not know, before it was screened in Malaysia, this film ‘Redha’ has been screened at several international film festivals before and has received the Audience Choice award at Luang Prabang Film Festival 2017, Laos.

This film is based on a true story that tells about the issue of autism among the people that occurs in our country. The film stars Namron, Nadiya Nissa, Remy Ishak, and Susan Lancaster.

3. Crossroad: One Two Jaga (2018)

Next, this film is one of the films that once sparked controversy when the film was screened. The film entitled ‘Crossroad: One Two Jaga’ tells the story in Malaysia where it shows how the issue of corruption and abuse of power.

Although the film did not get much response it managed to win the Best Film award during the 30th Malaysia Film Festival. Not only that, the film ‘Crossroad: One Two Jaga’ was also screened at several international Film Festivals before it was screened in Malaysia.

4. The Journey (2014)

The next film tells the story of family ties but there are some conflicts that arise when her daughter brings home her future husband who is a foreigner. The film titled ‘The Journey’ was first screened in 2014 but received a less encouraging response from the audience. Even so, the film has won 4 awards at the 27th Malaysian Film Festival.

5. Jagat (2015)

The next film is titled ‘Jagat’, it tells the story of an Indian boy named Appoy. He has faced various obstacles in life including his father who is a batterer and his uncle who is a former drug addict and a member of a gangster group. The conflict for this film arises when Appoy wants to follow in his uncle’s footsteps.

For those who do not know, this film has won the Best Malaysian Film award as well as the Best Director award during the 28th Malaysian Film Festival. If you are interested in watching this movie, you can watch it on Netflix.
