Follow These 4 Simple Ways On How To Store Iodized Salt Correctly

There has been announced recently in Malaysia that starting from the 1st of January, all salts that are packed below 20kg, will be sold as iodized salt. Malaysia’s supply of edible salts will be mixed with iodine. This action is taken in Malaysia to tackle a nationwide micronutrient deficiency. Because the type of salt now would be iodized salt, the ways to store them could be a little bit different.

Taken to the official post by the Nutrition Department Ministry of Health Malaysia, they have suggested four simple ways that can be followed to store iodized salt correctly. It is important for the salt to be kept correctly so that it can prevent iodine in the salt from evaporating.

According to the Facebook post, the 4 simple ways are:

  1. Carefully transfer the iodized salt into a closed and airtight container.
  2. Close the container’s lid tightly every time the salt is used so that less iodine vaporized out.
  3. If the salt is not used for too long, shake the container gently to distribute back the iodine throughout the salt evenly.
  4. Placed the iodized salt away from places that are near with heat, beside the window, the temperature that is too cold, and also away from direct sunlight.

MOH also reminded that starting January 1, 2021, all salts (≤20kg pack) sold in the market are iodine salts. Failure to do so, manufacturers and sellers may be fined not more than RM10,000 or imprisoned for a term not exceeding 2 years.
