Filled With Lots of Glistening Ice, A Must-Visit Diamond Beach In Iceland

Marilyn Monroe sang about diamonds being a girl’s best friend. So imagine a place with gigantic ‘diamonds’. On the black sand beach, there littered huge chunks of glistening ice. The place looks like something out of a fantasy movie.

Diamond Beach or Breiðamerkursandur in Icelandic got its name from the ice chunks that look like uncut diamonds. It is next to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland, about six hours away from Iceland’s capital Reykjavik.

Diamond Beach has become one of the top tourist attractions in the country in recent years and looking at some of its photos, it’s easy to see why it’s such an attraction.

Located in the glacial lagoon of Jökulsárlón, which is filled with large ice sheets that continuously break off from Breiðamerkurjökull, the Vatnajökull outlet glacier, the largest icecap in Europe. Some of these pieces of ice end up in the black sand and create an amazing visual effect.

The size of these ice can range from palm-size to larger than an average person. The color ranges from deep blue to bright white, and brilliant turquoise shades in-between. It is believed that Diamond Beach is a very popular place for marriage proposals and Instagram influencers.

If you plan to visit Diamond Beach during the winter, it is recommended to spend 2-3 days on this southern coast of Iceland, as daylight is limited and you want to enjoy the beauty of this place in ideal conditions.
