Instagram announced that Instagram Lite – a stripped-down version of the app. It was launched in 170 countries on Android. With the size of 2MB in comparison to the 30MB full version, it offers greater compatibility with older wi-fi networks and phones. Hence, allowing more users to make use of the platform.
Tzach Hadar, Facebook’s director of product management said, “(Instagram Lite) uses a lot less data so if you have a small data package you are not going to run out when you use the service. But the aim is for us to give the same breadth of experience you get on Instagram.”
Facebook Tel Aviv supervised the majority of the Instagram Lite development process along with a team in New York.
It aims to preserve the aesthetics of Instagram. However, it still prioritizes the services that Instagram Lite users use most which are messaging and video. Instagram removed accessory features like transition animations and AR filters — as well as the shopping tab. This is to keep the app performance consistent.
Advertisements will not appear on the app as of now, although both of these features may arrive with more expanded functionality down the line. Although some cosmetic customization options like “dark mode” will still be available, which is certainly pleasing for those with eye problems.
The wider global release of this app will begin soon.
