A bizarre case of a 25-year-old woman suffering from an incredibly rare medical condition. She bleeds from her eyes during her period. Haemolacria is a condition that causes people to cry blood. Indian doctors documented the case of a woman with a similar, but even rarer condition called ‘ocular vicarious menstruation’ – the condition causes female sufferers to bleed from their eyes, but only during their period.
The 25-year-old woman, visited the emergency room at a hospital in Chandigarh, complaining about crying blood. After sitting down with the patient to learn more about her symptoms. She experienced the symptoms when she was on her period even in the previous months. After eliminating all other probable causes, she was diagnosed with ocular vicarious menstruation.
According to Oddity Central, the woman said that the tears of blood did not cause her pain or discomfort, and extensive ophthalmology and radiology tests showed nothing unusual. Interestingly, she had no history of ocular bleeding or any ophthalmological problems, and she did not experience bleeding from other locations.
The very rare condition causes women to bleed from the extragenital organs, with the most common being the nose. However, cases in which the patient experienced bleeding from her lips, eyes, and even her lungs or abdomen, have been recorded.
“Oestrogen and progesterone can increase the permeability of capillaries resulting in hyperemia, congestion, and secondary bleeding from extrauterine tissue,” a researcher wrote.
After diagnosis, doctors gave her oral contraceptives containing a combination of estrogen and progesterone. After a three-month follow-up, it is said that the eye-bleeding had not occurred anymore.
