Meet Julius Maggi, Founder of The Most Popular Brand ‘Maggi’

Maggi is Malaysia’s favorite instant noodles. But how much do you know about the man behind it? The recipe for the iconic instant noodles credited to Julius Michael Johannes Maggi, founder of Maggi.

He was born in Frauenfeld, Switzerland on 9th October 1846. He is Italian but his family migrated to Switzerland. His father ran a hammer mill in Switzerland. After his father’s death, he took over that hammer mill in 1896.

However, it was a time of crisis when he took over the mill. It became a challenge for him to keep the business afloat. To survive, he decided to shift to the food business under the advice of physician Fridolin Schuler.

He was suggested for introducing packaged food made from milled pulses, legumes, or other items. And his targeted customers are working-class people.

They experimented for a year or two. Their first product was a leguminous flour in 1884 but did not receive many results.

He then made instant soups in 1886 which was a success. The flavor founded Maggi flavoring.

After capturing consumers’ attention, he introduced a number of new products between 1887 and 1889. The success leads him to open franchises in a number of cities. Among its best-selling products are cube stocks and soup flavorings which are perfect for people who do not have plenty of time.

Maggi died at the age of 66 years due to a stroke in 1912. He left behind what is now a beloved legacy worldwide and revolutionized the food industry. Many of his products are now a must-have in the Malaysian kitchen.
