Movie Review: What Can Be Said About ‘Greta’, Neil Jordan’s Psychological Thriller

Neil Jordan and Ray Wright came up with a psychological thriller movie, Greta in the year 2018. The film stars Isabelle Huppert as Greta Hideg, a widow who is obsessed with a young woman named Frances McCullen who was played by Chloë Grace Moretz, and Maika Monroe as Erica, Frances’s roommate.

It was premiered on the sixth of September 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival and then released on the first March of 2019 where the film has earned $18 million. This masterpiece received a review in terms of praises and critics too.

Here is the trailer of ‘Greta’:

What ‘Greta’ Is About

A young waitress named Frances McCullen lives with her friend and roommate in New York City while she was still grieving over the death of her mother one year prior. At the same time, she is maintaining a strained relationship with her workaholic father, Chris.

Greta and Frances’s story starts when Frances found a green handbag on a subway train. She figured out that the handbag belongs to Greta by the ID left inside. She then went to Greta’s house to return the handbag when Greta invited her inside for a cup of coffee.

Ever since then, they grew closer to each other. Frances keeps Greta accompany because she told her that she is a widow and her daughter is studying in Paris. Erica was against their relationship because to her, it seems ‘unnatural’. Things started to go downhill when Frances was at Greta’s home for dinner when she found a closet full of multiple handbags, the same as the one she returned to Greta.

Frances decided to cut ties with Greta as she feels disturbed by the things she saw but Greta would not leave her alone as she saw herself as a replacement for Frances’s mother. This cat-and-mouse story leaves the audience tense in their seats, waiting to see if Frances can get away from Greta or vice versa.

What Can Be Said About ‘Greta’

The plot of this film is enough to make it one of the best horror thriller movies but with the combination of veteran French actress, Isabelle Huppert and young American actress, Chloë Grace Moretz’s terrifying performances, this movie managed to get high ratings and good reviews.

It is not the lightest sinister movie you’ll ever see but it is also not the darkest. Safe to say that this movie stays in between and it is a definitely recommend kind of film.
