It is a rare thing when two twin babies in the United States are born five days after the first baby of the triplets is born. Interestingly, the mother’s first baby and two other twins were born five days apart in different years, thus making their births unique.
The first baby was born on 28 December 2019 while the other two twins were born on 2 January 2020.
The unique birth makes their mother, Kaylie DeShane, 33, hold the world record for the longest interval between the birth of triplets. It surpassed the previous record of two days.
The first baby, Cian was born prematurely at 22 weeks of age and his chances of survival were slim.
However, he and his twins, Rowan and Declan who are now 17 months old survived.
According to Kaylie, the specialist informed her pregnancy was high risk and advised her to abort two of the three twins to give a baby a chance to survive.
However, her motherly instinct was determined to continue the pregnancy of triplets through in-vitro fertility treatment (IVF) after a four-year attempt to conceive had previously failed.
“After trying to fall pregnant four years, with my husband, Brandon, 35, we decided to try IVF. We already have an adopted son, Holden, seven, and a step-daughter, Naveah, 12, but we wanted a sibling for them. We decided to place two embryos rather than just one because we thought we would have a better chance of having a baby.
“We were told that there was a ten percent chance of it ending up being twins and a one percent chance of it being a triplet pregnancy,” she said.
At 16 weeks old, Kaylie had to undergo emergency surgery because her cervix failed. There is a possibility that the couple lost Cian. Fortunately, the operation was successful. At 22 weeks and five days, Kaylie’s water broke.
While Cian was being taken to the NICU, Kaylie asked the doctor about the other two babies.
“Nothing was happening and the doctors explained to me that they wanted to hold off delivering the next two babies for as long as possible because it was so early in the pregnancy,” she added.
Cian has a nine percent chance of making it and five days later, a son named Declan and a girl named Rowan, were born.
The triplets spent four months in the NICU. Declan was allowed to return home on 17 April, Rowan followed him on 30 April and Cian returned on 4 May. It was reported that the babies grew up healthily.
