(Video) Your Pet Cat Experiences Seizure? Here’s What You Can Do To Help

Everyone who owns a pet cat must have been shocked and also panicked when they saw their beloved cat experience a seizure. They moved wildly, had hair all over their bodies standing up, and even scratched around endlessly. What’s more, this condition generally appears without any previous symptoms. But there is a reason exactly for what happens when a cat is having a seizure and there are also ways on how to deal with it.

This particular condition is actually not a disease, but a sign of a disturbance in the cat’s brain or nervous system. When this condition occurs, there are abnormal electrical impulses that suddenly disrupt processes in the brain. The nerves that control the body are stimulated by it. This causes unusual behavior in cats. Starting from falling, tremors, uncontrollable movements, biting, scratching, and so on.

There are several ways to tell if your cat is having a seizure. Several other signs that we should look out for, namely cats becoming more thirsty than usual, pacing, eating abnormally, and fatigue. If your cat is experiencing any of the conditions listed, it is a good idea to watch for any other changes. For example twitching, trembling bodies, the presence of body parts that are not functioning, and so on. It’s best to call your vet immediately if that happens.

Here are the steps you have to do as an owner when your cat experiences a seizure:

  • Put a towel or thick blanket around the cat to avoid bumps.
  • Keep a cat who is having a seizure out of reach of cats or other animals.
  • Avoid touching the mouth area as a cat who is cramped may bite it unconsciously.
  • Time seizures. Observe how long the condition lasts. Generally, seizures last 1 to 3 minutes.
  • If the seizure lasts more than 3 minutes, apply a cold compress to the cat’s abdomen, ears, and paws. Take them to the vet immediately as this is a sign of an emergency.
  • If the seizure occurs twice in 24 hours, you should also take him to the doctor immediately.

In addition, you should turn off the lights, television, and other sound sources around your cat to reduce stimulation. Also, do not touch your cat during a seizure, except when they are in a dangerous place.
