Did You Know? Mazda Once Made A Suitcase That Can Be Transformed Into A Car!

Mazda is well known for its innovation ever since the last time where the automakers have been making a revolution that people have never seen before. For example, a suitcase that you can drive.

In the year 1991, Mazda came up with the idea to invent the machine that was called “the suitcase car”. It was made by a group of seven engineers from Mazda’s manual transmission testing and research unit. With the suitcase car concept, they won the automaker’s Fantasyard in-house competition that was looking for the best creative mobility ideas. These engineers were given a small budget to bring the concept to life.

The end product was exciting. It used a pocket bike and a 57 x 75 cm Samsonite suitcase. Powered by a two-stroke gasoline engine of 1.7 horsepower that allows speeds of up to 30 kilometers per hour, the tricycle only takes one minute to assemble.

The suitcase car was declared a part of Mazda mostly because of its low center of gravity like the MX-5 Miata. It also resembles the three-wheeled Mazda-Go that was launched back in 1931.

Unfortunately, due to the unpractical weight of 32 kilograms, the suitcase car never made it to mass production. It is too heavy to be carried around like luggage. But then, the idea of it was impressive enough to be a rolling advertisement for an automaker and two more were made for Europe and U.S. The European version was showcased at the 1991 Frankfurt International Motor Show.
