The thing that keeps us going daily is breathing. Every day, we breathe without thinking because our body automatically works that way. But sometimes, our breathing patterns might change. Feeling short of breath, anxious, or about to faint are some breathing patterns that are abnormal. And this condition is called hyperventilation or known as over-breathing.

Healthy breathing is when there’s a good balance between the oxygen and carbon dioxide level. But in hyperventilation, the carbon dioxide level drops rapidly leading you to breathe faster and harder.

Hyperventilation is rapid or deep breathing which usually occurs when a person is stress or has anxiety. When you breathe, You inhale oxygen and expel carbon dioxide when you breathe. Excessive breathing can create low carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can induce many of the symptoms associated with hyperventilation.

Some symptoms of hyperventilation are:

  • Dizziness
  • Short of breath
  • Dry mouth
  • Sleep disruption
  • Muscle spasms
  • Chest pain/ palpitation
  • Numbness in your arm
  • Confusion

Hyperventilation is not a disease. So to treat hyperventilation depends on the cause. The aim here is to stay as calm as possible and to increase carbon dioxide levels in your body so it’ll slow your breathing rate. . For a start, you can start home remedy by breathing techniques. Get a paper bag and slowly inhale and exhale in it or hold your breath for 10 to 15 seconds at a time.

Sometimes, hyperventilation can last for 20-30 minutes. In such cases, you should consult a doctor.
