Halloween wouldn’t be Halloween without the movies that go along with it, just as Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without the music, and Valentine’s Day wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day without the chocolates. Of course, the jack-o-lanterns, costumes, and sweets are fun, but nothing beats a movie night filled with all the best horror films to get you in the mood for the spooky season.
You don’t have to be a horror lover to enjoy a good Halloween film–in fact, some aren’t even scary! They’re just brimming with October sweetness, which we only have 31 days to enjoy. With that said, here are some Hollywood and Korean horror films you can spook yourself with for Halloween.
1.
The Addams Family is a fictional family created by Charles Addams, an American cartoonist. Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, and Pugsley are among the Addams Family characters. The Addamses are a satirical parody of the ideal American family: a quirky, rich clan that revel in the macabre and are blissfully unaware that they are strange or frightening to others.
There’s a lot to love about the Addams Family movies–not just the first, but also the second!–there’s a lot to love about them. Great wit, campiness, and a gothic aesthetic. These are ideal watching for anyone who enjoys the Halloween spirit but doesn’t want to be scared.
2. Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox
“Tale of the Nine-Tailed,” starring Lee Dong Wook and Jo Bo Ah, may not appear to be the most terrifying of dramas, but it does have its share of disturbing moments. This drama has a lot going for it when it comes to all things dark and weird, with gods and demons and a broad variety of supernatural characters, but the finest aspect of the entire drama is the chemistry between our reluctant fox hero and his human love interest. In the big scheme of all things Halloween-y and terrifying, this drama is quite moderate, but for those who like to indulge in the dark while still being able to sleep at night, this drama is ideal.
3. Ma
Ma is a psychological horror film that looks at how childhood trauma influences adult decisions. An unpopular woman finds it difficult to form meaningful relationships with her peers, so she befriends high school pupils instead. As an elderly woman lets them use her basement for parties, a group of kids thinks they’ve found the perfect venue, but things start to change when they discover her strange behavior.
Sue Ann is dubbed “Ma” by the kids because she lets them a party in her basement and enforces a few ground rules: no swearing, no driving when inebriated, and no going upstairs. Sue Ann’s young pals reevaluate the connection as she becomes overbearing by sending SMS and video messages, only to be persuaded back by lies and booze.
4. Train To Busan
Gong Yoo’s character must get his little daughter from Seoul to Busan, the country’s final safe haven, after the country is unexpectedly invaded by zombies. This picture delivers in all of the ways a great zombie film should, with ravenous hordes, a fantastic cast of characters, and one of the best fathers in cinematic history. In terms of suspense, this picture will undoubtedly get your blood pumping, but it is far from the most horrific zombie film ever filmed. Nonetheless, the tale and characters are so well-written that it is well worth watching. This is the film for you if you prefer your zombies to have less heart and more bite.
5. Truth Or Dare
This is no regular kind of truth or dare game. Truth or Dare is a 2017 supernatural horror film about a group of students on vacation in Mexico who decide to play a game. However, things quickly spiral out of control when they discover they are playing the game with a demon who is hell-bent on murdering everyone for their sins and obsessions.
The game becomes fatal after a few turns, and they must find a method to survive against the odds and halt it before everyone dies. They all obtain proof of a malevolent spirit one by one. Donna Boone, a girl named Donna Boone, played the identical game in 1983 and lived to tell the tale. In the present, the party realizes that they can’t avoid death or the spirit that haunts them and that they must confront them head-on.
6. The Cat
So Yeon is soon haunted by visions of a cat-eyed girl after bringing a recently orphaned cat home with her. As terrifying as she is, things grow exponentially worse when a succession of killings leads her and her police officer buddy Jun Seok to link the gruesome deaths to the cats each victim had lately adopted. This cat-eyed phantom and her feline companions are driven by a really nasty spirit of revenge, and they’ve got the murder count to prove it. While those who are familiar with the Korean horror genre are unlikely to be surprised, those who are unfamiliar with the genre should find this film to be a terrifying delight.
7. Us
“Us” opens in 1986 with a young girl and her parents walking along the Santa Cruz boardwalk late at night. She walks out on the empty beach, away from everyone, to watch a gloomy flock of thunderclouds sweep in. Her gaze is drawn to an attraction just off the main pier, and she enters what appears to be an abandoned hall of mirrors, where she encounters something terrifying—her doppelgänger. The action of the film turns to the current day, as the Wilson family drives to their holiday house. Adelaide, the small girl who has grown up to be a woman, is afraid to return to that area on the Santa Cruz beach. Gabe, her husband, feels her reaction is exaggerated, but he attempts to make her feel better.
The family goes home for a nice night in after a slight scare and a few strange coincidences on the beach, only to have their tranquility shattered by a most improbable group of trespassers lined up across their driveway: doppelgängers of their family.
8. Master’s Sun
If supernatural horrors are your thing, “The Divine Fury” might be the movie for you. Park Seo Joon is an MMA fighter who is forced to seek treatment in the last place he ever wanted to be: the church. Haunted by horrible dreams and afflicted by a stigma he doesn’t comprehend, Park Seo Joon is forced to seek help in the last place he ever wanted to be: the church. When he joins forces with Ahn Sung Ki, the two find themselves fighting demons in an epic battle to redeem humanity, but it may cost them both their lives. This film is for you if you can’t get enough of a classic good against evil conflict, or if you simply enjoy a wonderful story filled with dreams and demons.
9. Paranormal Activity (2009)
Paranormal Activity follows a young couple, Katie and Micah, in their own home, and is one of the biggest sleeper blockbusters in horror. Katie tells Micah about a malevolent presence that has been haunting her since she was a child. Micah decides to videotape the couple in the middle of the night in order to figure out what’s going on. The demonic presence grows stronger as the night’s pass, and Katie and Micah must fight to survive and rid themselves of the entity that seems to desire more than just to torment them.
Would you be able to make it through a movie marathon with these terrifying choices? There are lots of choices here for any kind of Halloween and horror movie fan, whether you’re looking for the greatest slasher picture or just looking for something dark that the whole family can appreciate.
