History
Don Sheldon, a well-known Alaskan pilot, built the original residence. He was the first to use glacier landings to carry climbers, hunters, fishermen, and explorers to isolated locations that were unreachable by land. Don claimed five acres of land, which is now part of the natural reserve, and he registered his claim. Sheldon Chalet, as it stands today, was completed by his children and grandkids in 2018.
The Sheldon Family has labored for 50 years and three generations to make Don and Roberta Sheldon’s vision a reality. Sheldon Chalet invites visitors to enjoy the natural grandeur of Denali in luxurious comfort, just as the Sheldons intended.
The Historic Sheldon Mountain House, built-in 1966, is a landmark in a timeless setting. Don Sheldon had the idea to build a 212 square foot hut on his newly claimed 5 acre rock in the heart of Denali so that adventurous tourists from all over the world might experience what he thought to be one of the most unique sites on the planet.
Sheldon Mountain House is a backcountry adventurer’s dream, with an outhouse, a wood heater, and four padded sleeping beds.
Exploration
Guided mountaineering expeditions to the 90-square-kilometer Don Sheldon Amphitheatre, replete with climbing gear for ascending its 1,500-meter steep walls, are available for adventurous guests. Avalanche viewing, backcountry skiing, secluded hot springs, and gourmet glacier picnics are all on the menu. Drinks by the fire on the Chalet’s deck, as well as the rooftop sauna, await you after a day of adventure. Sheldon is frequently treated to a mesmerizing spectacle from the Aurora Borealis when night falls.
All of the exploration in the 35-square-mile Don Sheldon Amphitheater is based on mountaineering traditions. Your guides will first ensure that you are properly fitted for your climbing harness, snowshoes, helmet, and poles. After getting fitted, you’ll go to our Glacier School, where your guides will give you a crash course in glacier safety, rope team etiquette, and what to expect on the day’s expedition. It is not necessary to have prior mountaineering experience. Everyone will find something to their liking.
