Non-Halal Stickers On Hotel Lifts Are No Longer Needed, JAKIM Affirms

JAKIM states that non-halal stickers are no longer needed on hotel lifts.

On October 6, a Twitter user voiced their concern about the issue. It raised a heated discussion on social media.

A hotel in Kuala Lumpur designed a specific non-halal sticker for their lift. The lift was used to carry only non-halal things like alcohol and perishable items.

The Reason

The hotel stated that the sticker was a response to the authorities.

They believed— placing the sticker on the lift would help them acquire the halal certificate for their back-of-house operation.

The Hotel’s Justification

Since there were Muslim visitors and patrons at their hotel, it was to satisfy their needs.

Also, getting the non-halal sticker would give them a sense of security and assurance. This way, they would not doubt the hotel’s credibility. Understanding the concern of the guests would get the trust of their customers. Thus, more visitors will come to their hotel.

JAKIM’s Explanation

JAKIM was aware of the issue.

Particularly, they said, “According to the Malaysian Halal Certification Procedure Manual (Domestic) 2020 and the Malaysian Halal Management System 2020, there is no clause that stipulates that the hotel or premises need to place a “NON-HALAL-LIFT” marking.”

However, the hotel or premises can establish appropriate halal control mechanisms for the hotel’s facilities by the procedures. It is to maintain the integrity of Malaysia’s Halal Certification, JAKIM added.

But, getting a halal certificate is not that easy. They have to abide by the thorough procedures set by JAKIM.

It is a commendable move by the hotel. They were keen on addressing the regards of their guests.

Who knows? The non-halal sticker might be a stepping stone for them to obtain that certificate.
