Understanding What Is Dyslexia And The Symptoms

What is dyslexia? As a language-based learning disability, dyslexia makes it hard to read, spell, write, and talk effectively.

According to the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH), the characteristics of dyslexia can usually be identified when children start entering school, where reading, writing, counting and coloring skills are needed.

Tutoring or a dyslexia-specific curriculum can help the vast majority of youngsters who struggle in school. Parents’ and teachers’ emotional support also plays a big part.

Although there is no cure for the disorder, it can be effectively treated if diagnosed early enough. It’s never too late to get therapy, even if it stays untreated for years and not found until maturity.

Symptoms of dyslexia

Additionally, there are a few characteristics of dyslexia. There may be some signs that show your child has dyslexia before school age. Those signs are:

1. Difficult to understand and follow instructions.
2. Difficulty remembering letters, numbers, shapes, or colors
3. Trouble saying words
4. Has a hard time pronouncing a word that has just heard
5. Difficult to learn the sequence of month names and the concept of day and time
6. Avoiding writing and reading

When to see a doctor

Youngsters with this disorder frequently have difficulty learning to read by the time they are in kindergarten, when developing children are ready to begin reading.

Also, if your child’s reading ability is below his or her age or if you observe other indicators of it, you should discuss your concerns with your doctor.

If it is properly dealt with, reading problems in childhood can persist into adulthood.
