Avoid Being A Scam Victim, But With A ‘STAR’?

Scams can happen anywhere and anytime. It can occur in front of you or online. To avoid being a scam victim, a person should always stay alert of their surroundings.

We often find suspicious people, especially suspicious links or URLs online. Sometimes, when we check our phone for messages, an unknown number sends us a link. Would you click on the link?

Nowadays, there have been many scams happening in Malaysia. Thus, to avoid more from happening, @JPenerangan  on Twitter or The Department Of Information Malaysia shares a tip with us. The department hopes for us to apply STAR to avoid being the victim of scams.

But, what is STAR? For those who do not know, S is for Stop, T is for Think, A is for Act, and R is for Respond.

Stop

  • If you are thinking of clicking or tapping on a suspicious link, do not! Stop what you are doing! You do not know what will come for you. You might lose your money, or your devices might get a virus.

Think

  • Please think of the consequences if you click on the link. Moreover, think if the information given looks believable or not.

Act

  • Act quickly by reporting to the police about the link given. The police will investigate the rest.

Respond

  • After the police have given you a statement, do respond by telling your family and friends about the scam. You do not want them to be the victim too.
