Elon Musk Begins Laying Off Twitter Employees Today

Twitter’s new director, Elon Musk, begins laying off his employees today. Additionally, Twitter notified their employees that this layoff is necessary to “reduce [their] global workforce” today, 4th November, according to an unsigned internal memo viewed by The Verge.

Since Musk’s appointed as Twitter’s new owner, he quickly changed the operational and product roadmap of the social media app.

Also, Twitter employee’s layoff was confirmed a week after he began taking the role as Twitter’s director, igniting more speculations about the timing and scope of the expected layoffs inside Twitter.

Around half of the 7,500-person workforce will lose their jobs

Even though the memo doesn’t share the exact details, Musk is expected to cut around half of Twiter’s employees.

Then, Musk and his team of outside advisors had a week to determine which engineers they should keep. Their decisions are based on each worker’s contributions to Twitter’s codebase.

Twitter’s memo for their workers

Also, according to the memo given to the Twitter staff, they’ll receive an individual email by 9 AM PST on Friday, 4th November. The subject line will be: Their role at Twitter. The Twitter team asks the employees to check their email. This also includes their spam folder.

You can read the detailed Twitter memo to employees here.

How will they know if they are affected or not?

In the memo, the team highlights:

  • If the employee’s employment isn’t impacted, they’ll receive a notification via their Twitter email
  • Next, if their employment is affected, they’ll receive a notification with the next steps via their personal email
  • If they don’t receive an email from twitter-hr@ by 5 PM PST on Friday, 4th November, they have to email peoplequestions@twitter.com

In the memo, they said, “[The team] acknowledge this is an incredibly challenging experience to go through, whether or not [the employees] are impacted.”

Even so, they voiced their gratitude for the employee’s understanding of this situation. “Thank you for continuing to adhere to Twitter policies that prohibit you from discussing confidential company information on social media with the press or elsewhere.”

What will their future look like?

Twitter employees are divided into two. Some express their desire to get laid off and receive severance. The others worry about their future if they disagree with Musk’s decision.
