Margot Robbie has stated that Disney has abandoned its plans to make a female-centred Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Margot Robbie replaced Johnny Depp as the series’ protagonist following the actor’s own legal troubles. The cancellation of the Pirates of the Caribbean film may indicate a new course for Disney’s franchise.
In 2020, Birds of Prey director Christina Hodson revealed that she will direct a new Pirates of the Caribbean film starring Robbie. Jerry Bruckheimer, the franchise’s longtime producer, is on board to produce the film.
The movie was never meant to be a continuation of the franchise. Rather, it was suppose to be a fresh take on the genre with brand new characters.
The Pirates of the Caribbean film series, starring Johnny Depp has been a huge financial success for Disney. The film first released in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Jack Sparrow has stayed iconic even if other series regulars like Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley have left the franchise.
It’s easy to see why Disney decided to recast the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise with Margot Robbie. Nonetheless, it appears that the picture just didn’t work out for a variety of reasons. This casts severe question on the future of the franchise.
