Born on the 10th of August 1947, his name is Dato’ Seri Haji Anwar Ibrahim. He was born in Bukit Mertajam, Penang. He is married to Dr. Wan Azizah Dato’ Dr. Wan Ismail and gifted with six children. Just like her husband, Wan Azizah is active in political matters, so does their daughter, Nurul Izzah Anwar.

Anwar first made his name as a student leader who founded Malaysia’s Islamic Youth Movement or known as ABIM. In 1982, he joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO). He held multiple ministerial posts. Then, in 1993, he became Mahathir Mohamad’s deputy.

In 1998, he led a reform movement, where he led protests against Mahathir. The reform would soon influence the Malaysian generation of democracy activists. Soon after, he was arrested. He denied the charges of corruption and sodomy. Nevertheless, he was imprisoned for fifteen years. Anwar believed that his imprisonment had something to do with a smear campaign.

After he was released from prison, he emerged as the head of the opposition party. However, again, there have been claims of sodomy on Anwar. He claimed that the government wanted to sideline him. Due to a lack of evidence, he got out of jail in 2012. As he was preparing for the state election in 2014, he was back in jail. He then received the mercy of the King back in 2018.

Once contested for the Port Dickson parliamentary seat, but failed in being a Prime Minister. On the 15th General election this year, he won with 3,736 votes for Tambun seat.

We hope with Anwar’s rule of Malaysia, he will do his duties responsibly for a better Malaysia.
