Mechamato Movie, a locally produced 3D animated movie showcasing Malaysian cultures and values, is set to hit international theatres in 2023.

Movie director and chief executive officer of Animonsta Studios (Mosta) Nizam Abd Razak said the Mechamato Movie, which will be screened in theatres across Malaysia and Brunei starting Dec 8, is the fruition of the company’s aspiration to empower Malaysian culture via creative content.

“The main setting of this film, Kota Hilir, was inspired by the architecture of Bandar Hilir and Kota Melaka. Monsta also showcased various traditional cultures and elements such as the dester, keris, trishaw, and the famous karipap in hopes that the global audiences will fall in love with the uniqueness of our country.”

“From 2023 onwards, we are looking forward to exporting this movie. It was designed to be exported and bring our culture and values abroad,” he said during the movie’s gala premiere at Midvalley Megamall here tonight.

Nizam said previous success proved that there are strong demands for local animated films and believed domestic industry players should be empowered to achieve greater heights in the international market.

“The Mechamato series managed to penetrate 65 countries around the world since its launch in Dec 2021, including Japan, South Korea, Portugal Turkiye, and Australia, to name a few.

“Exporting our films aligns nicely with the government’s vision through Malaysia Digital Economic Corporation (MDEC) to promote our country internationally. We look forward to continuing this effort and hope other local industry players will succeed as well,” he said.

Meanwhile, vice-president, head of Astro Shaw, and Malay Nusantara Bunisness Raja Jastina Raja Arshad said Monsta sets a new standard for an international movie of great caliber through the production of Mechamato Movie.

‘They’ve shown in the past that they’re capable of bringing Malaysia’s name to the global stage. The production team spent a considerable amount of time perfecting the formulas of their craft.

“Initially slated to be released at the end of 2019, the movie release was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and it provided an opportunity to improve the quality of the film, promising everyone a wholesome and satisfying experience,” she said.

Mechamato Movie is the second collaboration between Astro Shaw and Monsta after the film BoboiBoy Movie 2, which became the first local animated film to cross the RM30 million mark.

The movie follows the origin story of Amato (BoBoiBoy’s father) and MechaBot, a ‘Power Sphere’ with the ability to mechanize ordinary everyday objects.
