The First MCU Mutant, Getting To Know Who Namor Is!

With the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the film introduces Namor, the new antagonist (or antihero) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

Actor Tenoch Huerta brings the character, one of the original Marvel characters ever, to the MCU for the first time in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The MCU makes a minor change to Namor’s mythology by having his underwater country be called Talocan rather than Atlantis. This change was influenced in part by Huerta’s Indigenous Mexican origin.

Lets take a look at some facts of the upcoming character.

Interesting facts about Namor

1. Marvel’s first mutant

At various points in time, Namor the Sub-Mariner has held the title of Marvel’s “first” mutant. Because of his mixed Atlantean and human ancestry and the presence of an X-gene that gives him extraordinary abilities, he is classified as a mutant.

In the comics, he was also a member of the X-Men and was part of the Pheonix Five. The Phenoix Five are people who shared the powers of the Pheonix.

2. He is an ally of Captain America

In the comics back in the ’30s and ’40s, Namor and Captain America often teamed up and were friends. This was before Captain America was frozen in ice.

Thanks to his mutant physiology, Namor in the comics is over 100-years-old. However, Captain America and Namor weren’t always friends. They once fought when Namor attacked Wakanda and Captain America tried to stop him with Black Panther.

3. Namor is one of the richest heroes in Marvel

In the comics, Namor is the king of Atlantis. His kingdom is larger than any other on Earth. He possesses large amount of wealth and natural resources of the planet.

He is also the heir to the Atlantean royal family. His estimated net worth is around $260 billion.

4. Namor’s powers

Since the Sub-Mariner lives underwater, he can breathe without any oxygen and can swim efficiently. Other than that, he can talk and control sea animals.

He can also heal when he is in water and can partially control water telekinetically. He also has super strength and speed that help him fight and he has the ability to fly with little wings on his ankles.

5. Namor came first, then Aquaman

A lot of people are familiar with Aquaman and some with you might think that Namor is a copy of the DC hero. However, Namor actually came first before Aquaman.

Aquaman was created in 1941, two years after the creation of Marvel’s Atlantean. They both take inspiration from the lost city of Atlantis. Nonetheless, the MCU version will have a different origin than the one in the comics.
