Malaysia Is Facing Challenge In Maintaining Sustainable Fisheries?

Fishing is important for fishermen. Nevertheless, this action might challenge Malaysia in maintaining the sustainable management of fisheries. If fishermen are not careful enough, they might damage the marine ecosystem.

There are many animals in the sea. Not only animals but there are also plants and other organisms which humans rely on to continue with their lives. It is understood that fishermen mean only the good. It is their job, and they also help us with food to eat.

However, from a sharing on Twitter from @climateaidil, the harsh truth is the Minderoo Foundation has graded our country with an ‘F’ on the Global Fishing Index.

Based on the information from the Minderoo Foundation website, “there is no evidence that Malaysia has made a progress towards restoring fish stocks to sustainable levels.”

Aside from that, Minderoo Foundation also stated that 92 percent of Malaysia’s catch comes from stocks with unknown sustainability status. This statement means that they are not accessed, and they lack quantitative data to estimate stock health.

Furthermore, there are critical gaps in the data collection and the use of science in management measures. Thus, Malaysia is now facing a critical challenge to manage the sustainability of fisheries.

There is a video of a fisherman in Maine where he released back the egg-bearing lobsters that he caught into the sea. This is one of the ways to ensure the population of lobsters in the waters.

Therefore, it is hoped that Malaysia can implement a way to sustain the lives of the habitats in the sea. At the same time, Aidil hoped that the livelihood of the fishermen are taken care of.
