2025 Travel Cheat Sheet: 5 Trips with Only 5 Days of Annual Leave!

With a calendar full of public holidays, 2025 is the year to tick off your travel bucket list. This guide is your cheat sheet to get 5 long weekends with minimal effort. Take one day of annual leave for each of the listed public holidays, and you will be able to turn them into 5 extended weekends – the perfect time for a getaway! Whether it’s exploring Malaysia’s hidden gems or revisiting classic favourites, we’ve got the perfect destination for every holiday.

1. Chinese New Year – January 29 & 30 (Wednesday & Thursday)

Take Leave: January 31 (Friday)

Skip the crowds heading north for Chinese New Year and opt for a nature-filled escape to Pahang instead. Explore Taman Negara, a pristine rainforest teeming with wildlife, where you might spot tigers and other incredible animals in their natural habitat. For an adrenaline rush, take a thrilling wooden boat ride through the rapids for an adventurous experience.

If tigers and boat rides are a tad too adventurous, Pahang offers a gentler wildlife experience at the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary. Here, you can feed, bathe, and learn about the Malaysian elephants through engaging educational sessions. Just a short distance away, Deerland Park provides delightful interactions with deer, rabbits, and peacocks, suitable for adults and kids alike.

2. Labour Day – May 1 (Thursday)

Take Leave: May 2 (Friday)

Labour Day is the perfect time to reward yourself for all your hard work. Take Friday off and hop on a redBus ferry to Batam for a well-deserved four-day getaway. This vibrant destination offers the best of both worlds, from relaxing beach resorts to duty-free shopping. Don’t miss iconic landmarks like the Barelang Bridge, a stunning series of six bridges connecting three islands, and the bustling Nagoya Super Block for some retail therapy.

3. Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday – June 2 (Monday)

Take Leave: May 30 (Friday)

Spend the YDPA’s birthday exploring Johor, starting with a visit to Laman Mahkota, home to the iconic royal crown replica. Don’t miss the Monumen Kemahkotaan Johor, a stunning new landmark situated in Dataran Batu Hampar.

After this regal-themed start, head east to Desaru Coast for a short escape. Discover its rich biodiversity through birdwatching or join an educational Desaru Beach and tide pool tour for a refreshing, nature-filled experience.

4. Malaysia Day – September 16 (Tuesday)

Take Leave: September 15 (Monday)

Turn your Malaysia Day into a memorable four-day weekend by taking Monday off and exploring the wonders of Sabah or Sarawak. This special day marks the formation of the Malaysian federation, making it the perfect time to experience the rich heritage of East Malaysia.

In Sabah, immerse yourself in natural beauty by visiting Kinabalu Park, Poring Hot Spring, Desa Dairy Farm, and Pekan Nabalu. For a hassle-free experience, check out the 4D3N Kota Kinabalu and Kundasang package on redBus. If Sarawak calls to you, don’t miss the Sarawak Cultural Village or explore the state’s stunning national parks and iconic landmarks, like the famous Cat Statue along the Kuching Waterfront.

5. Christmas – December 25 (Thursday)

Take Leave: December 26 (Friday)

While Malaysia celebrates Christmas under the sun, why not escape to the cool air of Genting Highlands for a festive getaway?

Resorts World Genting famously transforms into a magical Winter Wonderland at the end of the year, offering unique activities each season to captivate visitors. With convenient bus routes to Genting, getting there is easy. While in the highlands, enjoy some fun at the Genting Skytropolis Indoor Theme Park, or take the scenic cable car ride up. It’s the perfect Christmas retreat, offering both festive cheer and exciting attractions.

Planning your getaway is easy with redBus. Enjoy seamless travel with advance bus and ferry bookings, and explore the ‘Things to Do’ feature to easily secure tickets to local attractions and tours.
