Google just dropped some serious moves to future-proof Malaysian journalism. With the wrap-up of Project Sigma: Engaging Malaysian Gen Z for News, the tech giant backed by the Ministry of Communications Malaysia is helping local newsrooms catch up with the TikTok generation. But that’s not all: Google also revealed two new AI-powered initiatives to keep the future of news smart, fast, and Gen Z-approved.
“Project Sigma, in collaboration with Google, has demonstrated that understanding and evolving with Gen Z’s news consumption habits is vital to the future of our news industry,” said YB Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, Minister of Communications. “We are committed to fostering partnerships like this to ensure Malaysian journalism stays relevant, resilient, and resonant for generations to come.”
Meet Gen Z: The New News Crowd
Born between 1995 and 2012, Gen Z makes up 26% of Malaysians and their media habits are changing the game. They don’t always go looking for news; news comes to them, via short-form videos, real talk from creators, and mobile-first content that actually feels human.
Recognising this shift, Google kicked off Project Sigma in December 2024 to help newsrooms experiment with how, where, and what kind of content speaks to the next-gen audience.
Over 10 weeks, six major Malaysian media outlets Astro AWANI, Berita Harian, Malaysiakini, Sinar Daily, Sin Chew Daily, and The Star dived into Gen Z’s world, trying out bold new ideas to capture attention and build loyalty. Here’s what went down:
- Vertical video? Yes please. Newsrooms tested out mobile-native formats that boosted user growth and kept Gen Zs scrolling longer.
- Quizzes FTW. Interactive formats helped engage younger audiences especially women aged 18 to 28.
- Animated content = visual storytelling win. Motion graphics and slick visuals made complex stories click with Gen Z’s visual-first mindset.
“We’re proud of what Project Sigma achieved and thankful for the support of the Ministry of Communications and FT Strategies,” said Kate Beddoe, Managing Director of News Partnerships, APAC at Google. “This program was built with the industry to help Malaysian publishers meaningfully engage Gen Z news consumers.”
The full insights from the program have been bundled into a practical report think of it as a playbook for any newsroom wanting to connect with young Malaysians now, not five years too late.
Next Up: AI Meets Journalism
Now that Project Sigma has set the tone, Google’s turning the page with two major AI-focused initiatives for Malaysia’s media scene:
- AI Literacy Program with MPI – Kicking off in June 2025, this new collab with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) will train journalists and journalism students to level up their reporting with AI tools. Think: creating smarter content, growing audiences, and driving ad revenue all with the help of Google’s tech and MPI’s training power.
- News AI Lab Malaysia – An 18-month innovation sprint to help publishers adopt AI across editorial and business ops. Expect hands-on workshops, online learning, and on-the-ground support to get Malaysian newsrooms AI-ready and thriving in the digital age.
