Empowering Patients, One Page at a Time: Malaysia Launches ‘Your Lung Cancer IO Treatment Diary’ to Support Cancer Care Journey

In a major step forward for patient empowerment, MSD together with the Lung Cancer Network Malaysia (LCNM) has launched ‘Your Lung Cancer IO Treatment Diary’, the country’s first comprehensive educational diary for lung cancer immunotherapy (IO) patients.

Designed to help patients better understand their diagnosis and take an active role in their treatment journey, the diary provides clear, practical guidance and emotional support throughout their care experience.

This initiative builds on Malaysia’s leadership in global lung health advocacy following the World Health Organization (WHO) resolution on “Promoting and Prioritizing an Integrated Lung Health Approach,” championed by Malaysia in May 2025. The resolution calls for stronger action to prevent, diagnose, and treat lung diseases, including lung cancer.

“Malaysia’s WHO resolution signals serious commitment to improving lung health outcomes,” said Dr. Abdullahi Sheriff, Managing Director of MSD Singapore, Malaysia, and Brunei. “At MSD, we see this diary as part of our role in supporting that vision giving patients a simple, practical tool that enhances how they experience and manage their cancer journey.”

Lung cancer remains one of the most pressing health challenges in Malaysia, ranking as the second most common cancer among men and fourth among women, with nearly 95% of cases detected at advanced stages.

“This diary helps complete the continuum of lung cancer care,” said Dr. Tho Lye Mun, Clinical Oncologist and President of LCNM. “It turns patients from passive recipients into active partners. When patients understand their journey and can communicate better with their doctors, outcomes can improve significantly.”

The IO Treatment Diary was developed collaboratively by LCNM and MSD to directly address the needs of Malaysian patients. It includes:

  • Weekly symptom tracking pages with easy visual indicators

  • Educational content written in simple, accessible language

  • Side effect recognition guides for early detection

  • Spaces for notes and questions to prepare for consultations

  • Well-being progress trackers to monitor recovery

For many patients, understanding their condition can be as important as the treatment itself.

“Any cancer diagnosis can be overwhelming,” said Prof Dr Murallitharan Munisamy, Managing Director of the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM). “This diary helps patients feel informed, motivated, and more in control. When they understand their journey, they’re more likely to stay on course with their treatment.”

Available free of charge to lung cancer patients at participating hospitals and clinics nationwide, ‘Your Lung Cancer IO Treatment Diary’ represents a growing focus on patient-centered care — where education, communication, and compassion play as vital a role as medicine itself.

A digital version of the diary can also be accessed online via the Lung Cancer Network Malaysia.
