Malaysia Leads Global Demand for Premium Flights as Searches Surge 250%

Malaysian travellers are increasingly prioritising comfort, personalised experiences and premium stays, with new data from Trip.com revealing a significant shift in travel preferences.

In the first half of 2026, searches for first and business class flights from Malaysia surged 250% year-on-year. This placed Malaysia at the top of all markets on Trip.com’s platform globally, with growth more than double the worldwide average.

The trend reflects a growing preference for experiences that go beyond the destination itself, from lie-flat seats and airport lounges to personalised itineraries and five-star accommodation.

Millennials and Gen X Drive the Shift Towards Luxury Travel

Millennials and Gen X are increasingly willing to invest in higher-quality travel experiences as they reach their peak earning years.

Globally, close to one in two five-star hotel bookers on Trip.com’s platform are aged between 35 and 49. This reflects a growing willingness to prioritise experience quality over price.

The trend is also evident in Malaysia, where five-star hotel searches rose 72% year-on-year, while bookings for Trip.com’s Platinum Luxury Hotels increased by 102% in the first half of 2026.

Luxury Escapes Closer to Home

Luxury travel does not always mean heading overseas. More Malaysian travellers are discovering premium stays within the country.

Properties recognised on Trip.Best 2026 Asia 100 list of Luxury Hotels include The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi, Four Seasons Resort Langkawi and Mandarin Oriental Desaru Coast.

These destinations reflect the growing appeal of high-end hospitality closer to home, as travellers seek more refined experiences without necessarily taking long-haul flights.

Personalised Experiences Take Centre Stage

The shift towards premium travel extends beyond flights and accommodation. Globally, searches for luxury and spa experiences increased 170% year-on-year, while custom tour bookings on Trip.com grew 600%. Malaysia ranked among the platform’s top five source markets for custom tours.

Travellers are increasingly building trips around their interests, whether wellness retreats, immersive local experiences or bespoke itineraries.

Trip.com’s Black Diamond members, for example, book nearly 20 times more frequently than the average traveller. They also spend an average of at least 14 days per trip, reflecting a preference for more in-depth destination experiences.

Live Events Inspire Travel Plans

Live entertainment is another major driver of travel demand. Across Asia Pacific, 63% of travellers have crossed an international border to attend a concert, while 66% say they would consider doing so.

Trip.com also recorded triple-digit growth in live entertainment packages in 2025.

From concerts and festivals to sporting events, travellers are increasingly planning entire trips around experiences they do not want to miss. Flights, accommodation and itineraries are then arranged around the event itself.

Travellers Seek Better Experiences and Reliable Support

“What we are seeing in the data is a traveller who has made a very deliberate decision about what matters,” said Stephane Thong, General Manager of Trip.com Malaysia.

“In a climate where spending decisions are being scrutinised more than ever, Malaysian travellers are not cutting back on travel, they are investing more deeply in it.”

Thong added that travellers are increasingly focused on the quality of the entire journey, from the first moment of travel to the last.

To support these expectations, Trip.com offers 24/7 multilingual customer service, backed by a service guarantee. Travellers can receive assistance throughout their journey, from booking to arrival.
