An ancient graveyard that contains more than 1,500 bodies have been discovered in Japan. Interestingly, each of those bodies was bent into a circular hole.
The ancient graveyard was found in the city of Osaka during development work near a major station. It is said that plans are still going ahead to build skyscrapers on top of the burial ground.
It is believed that the graveyard dates from the Edo period, which dates from the early 1600s to the mid-1800s.
As reported by The Sun UK, The Osaka City Board of Education and the Osaka City Cultural Heritage Association have been excavating the area where the graveyard was found since 1991.
“The remains excavated, including human bones, are currently in the process of being sorted and analyzed,” said Osaka City in a statement.
“In addition to humans, animals are also buried in the cemetery, with more than four piglets in the northern part of the cemetery and two horses in the southern part,” they added.
The ancient graveyard was said to be a burial ground for the common people due to the lack of grave items found. It is believed that these bodies were buried at the same time during a natural disaster or a pandemic.
It is thought that the graveyard was ‘Umeda Tomb’ or ‘Umeda Graves’, one of seven historical burial sites said to be under Osaka city.
All of the bodies that were found will be gathered and reburied in a different location.
