A large elephant seal was reported to have caused a disturbance in a small town last Monday. The animal with the size of a car was seen roaming the streets of Puerton Cisnes in Chile, shocking residents.
According to Mirror UK, several photos and videos showing the animal moving aimlessly before residents and police helped it return to the sea.
People are believed to have used buckets of water on the animal to ensure it remains hydrated.
A total of 50 people are believed to have ‘driven’ the animal back into the sea and it took several hours. Police also helped by using plastic nets in the hope that the animal would walk towards him.
Sergeant José Muñoz of the Chilean Navy told local media that he was very grateful to the local community for their good support.
“I want to thank the community for the great support. We are going to be making constant patrols so that no more get back into town and any accident occurs,” he said.
Elephant seals are usually found in sub-Antarctic and Antarctic waters and can grow up to six meters.
