An entrepreneurial furniture-maker in China borrowed Donald Trump’s by turning the testy and ill-tempered ex-leader into a Buddha-like statue.
Listed as the Trump Buddha statue on Taobao and marketed with the slogan, “Make your company great again!” It is available in two sizes of 16cm and 46cm with the price of 999 yuan (RM632) and 3,999 yuan (RM2531) respectively.
With the signature position, it has Trump’s hands folded in his laps, thumbs pointing outwards – it signifies meditation and contemplation.
The seller based Xiamen, Fujian province. She said that customers bought “dozens” of the 100 statues. A buyer turned it into a humble reminder not to be “too Trump”. The public knows the former president’s personality with his short-temper and no filter. The 74-year-old left the White House in January for his Mar-a-Lago retreat in Florida.
Trump’s name can be rendered in two ways in Chinese. One way is 特朗普 (tèlǎngpǔ). The other way is 川普 (chuānpǔ). Therefore, plenty of sellers use these names to sell merchandise and capitalising Trump’s face on it such as models, facemasks, hats, socks.
