COVID-19: UniMAP Uses GPS Technology To Record Staff Attendance

KANGAR, March 17 (Bernama) — University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) is implementing global positioning system (GPS) coordinate technology to record staff attendance to replace the biometric scanning system in its campuses.

Vice-chancellor Prof Dr R. Badlishah Ahmad said the use of GPS is part of the initiative to prevent the spread of COVID-19 which has now been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In a statement today, he said the thumbprint method is seen as posing a greater risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus.

“Through the GPS method, the location of the office is incorporated into the GPS to ensure the transparency in recording staff attendance and the data will be uploaded to the staff attendance database,” he said.

He said the technology will not only be cost-effective but also time-saving as the process will be conducted using smartphones.

Other than the campus in Pauh Putra in Kuala Perlis, UniMAP has two other campuses, namely the city campus in Kangar, and the Kampung Unicity Alam campus in Sungai Chuchuh in Padang Besar.
