Costume designer who turns to film director, Joel Schumacher has passed away in New York City on Monday morning after fighting cancer for a year. He was 80 years old.
Schumacher was well-known for directing stylish film throughout the 1980s and 1990s. His films were not always critically acclaimed, but it is loved by the people for capturing the feel of the era.
He was also known for his work on directing two Batman films after Tim Burton exited Warner Bros. The first Batman film that he directed was Batman Forever which has grossed more than $300 million globally. The film was starring Val Kimmer, Tommy Lee Jones, Jim Carrey, and Nicole Kidman.
Schumacher last Batman film was in 1997 with the title of Batman and Robin, starring George Clooney as Batman and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze.
He was born in New York City and studied at Parsons the New School for Design and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He then worked in the fashion industry but decided to instead go for a career in filmmaking.
In 2010, Schumacher have received a special award by Camerimage, the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography. The next year, he receives another award that is Distinguished Collaborator Award at the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
