As many as 10,000 Muslims in the Holy Land have the opportunity to perform Hajj this year compared to about 2.9 million people from all over the world last year.
However, the pilgrims who started the worship today practiced new habits by wearing face masks and performing social imprisonment as a government effort to prevent COVID-19.
Based on the video uploaded on the official Twitter page of the CIC Saudi Arabia, it was found that the pilgrims were taken to the Holy Mosque before performing circumambulation around the Kaaba where Muslims from all over the world pray.
They are taken in small groups and only through designated routes. This clearly shows the difference with the previous normal situation where an ocean of people surrounded the Temple during the hajj season.
This year’s hajj season receives the least number of pilgrims in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to prevent COVID-19. Performing Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and obligatory for Muslims who can, at least once in life.
The Saudi government had previously stated that only about 1,000 pilgrims living in the area were permitted to perform the hajj but local media reported that up to 10,000 were allowed to participate in the hajj season this time.
They will also be quarantined after performing the worship. According to the Ministry of Hajj, all pilgrims are also given a complete kit of kits involving sterilized pebbles.
