Christchurch Victims’ Families Confront Gunman At Sentencing Hearing

The Christchurch massacre that happened two years ago had killed 51 people while they are having Friday prayers at two mosques. The killer, Brenton Tarrant pleaded guilty to the court and will be sentenced to life without parole, which is a penalty never used in New Zealand.

Tarrant has also pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of 40 people and a charge of terrorism. He is presenting himself during the third day of the court hearing.

All family members of the massacre victims spilled out their sorrows over the death during the court hearing. It was filled with emotional victim impact statements.

Abdiramen Ibrahim reads his father’s statement about his young brother who was shot dead during the massacre. He said, “This terrorist killed my beloved three-year-old son, and to me, it is as though you have killed the whole of New Zealand.”

The father, Aden Diriye also added that the killer will get severe punishments in the next life because of his wrongdoings to many victims.

Several other victims’ family members also stated their sorrows towards the killing. John Milne, whose his 14-year-old son was shot during the prayer said, that he hopes the killer would at least say sorry to his actions.
